According to a report by BMJ Case, engaging in rough s*x can be very harmful for the man as he risks fracturing his penis leading to serious complications.

The report states that a 36-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a history of trauma to genitalia during intercourse. The patient reported the forceful collision between his penis and the bed and audible clicking sound with swollen penis thereafter. On examination, the genitalia was swollen with an ‘S’ shaped deformity.

The skin over the swelling was apparently normal, with no local rise of temperature. A provisional diagnosis was made after clinical evaluation. Scrotum and testes examination revealed no abnormality. A subcoronal circumferential incision with de-gloving of penile skin was used to access the tunica. A rent in tunica albuginea and corpora cavernosa identified and the defect repaired with absorbable suture material after removal of clot and properly maintaining haemostasis. The patient's postoperative recovery was uneventful. The following case report demonstrates a typical case of fracture penis.

As the Valentine Day draws nearer, Nigerians are urged to take more care in matters pertaining to the bedroom to avoid stories that touch.

Here is how to know if you have a fractured penis:

• According to a study published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, the penis does not have a bone — but instead the corpus cavernosa — two tubes made of spongy material — run along its length.

• Blood flows into this tissue, which is what makes the penis hard during an erection.

• If, in the throes of sexual intercourse you hear an audible crack, please take an immediate break to see if all is well!

• Even if you don’t take a break, if it’s penile injury, you will immediately go soft and feel a sharp pain at the base of my manhood.

• What happens is that the snap will lead to a tear in the corpus cavernosa’s sheath, which means blood will leak out.

• Your manhood will swell immediately and turn black.

• It will curve or twist to the side, instead of pointing forward in a normal situation.

• Your penis will feel warm, but achy, indicating some torn muscles.

• You must try and urinate to see if blood comes with the urine.

• If you urinate blood at this stage, then you have a serious problem indeed. You must not wait to see how it’s going to unfold, because you may lose your penis permanently!

• Depending on doctor’s diagnosis, you may have to wait for a few weeks before you can have sex again!
