Abuja Driver to Get Four Strokes of Cane for Stealing Sandals

Corporal punishment is set to be administered to a repentant driver who admittedly stole a pair of sandals under the influence of hunger.

 
 
A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 35-year-old driver, ‎Mammuda Abubakar, to four strokes of cane for stealing a pair of sandals.
 
The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, warned Abubakar to desist from committing crime.
 
Abubakar, who pleaded guilty, begged the court for mercy, saying he stole the sandals because of hunger.‎
 
The driver, a resident of Area 1, Garki, Abuja, ‎was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.
 
Earlier, the prosecutor, Ogubwe Fidelis, told the court that Abubakar criminally trespassed into the house of one Mohammed Dauda on March 11 and stole a pair of sandals, valued at N2,500.
 
He said the sandals ‎were recovered from the convict during police investigations.
 
The offences contravened Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
