Kelvin Nyoni, a jailbird who escaped from prison in the middle of a 28-month sentence at Whawha Prison was re-arrested at a prophet’s church seeking deliverance a day later.

According to B-Metro, Kelvin Nyoni escaped from two prison officials on 8 March while fetching firewood with other prisoners at a forest nearby.

His run from the law didn’t last as he was re-arrested at a religious camp in the Pfende area of Gweru on the following day.

A source told B-Metro that a prophet at the church called the police after Nyoni had revealed he was on the run.

“When Nyoni arrived at the shrine he was in prison clothes which prompted the prophet to ask questions. He confessed that he had escaped from jail and wanted the prophet to help him evade getting re-arrested,” said the source.

The source added: “Nyoni was told to wait in the queue and the prophet secretly called the police. He was shocked when he saw police approaching. He ran but was eventually caught.”

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services public relations officer Jere Ruzive confirmed the incident.
