Meningitis Epidemic Kills 745 People in One Week

The current outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria has continued to claim lives despite efforts by the Federal Government to curtail the menace.

The toll in a suspected meningitis epidemic in Nigeria has killed 745 people, a rise of over 250 in just over a week, the federal government said on Wednesday.
 
Over 8,000 suspected cases of the disease have been reported across the country over the past five months although most have occurred in five northern states.
 
The toll last week stood at 489. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to speed up the vaccination process in affected areas to prevent the spread of the disease.
