Recent Borno Market Bomb Blast Claims 50 Lives

A suicide bomber suspected to be a member of the Boko Haram sect detonated a bomb at the Sabon Gari market causing collateral damages.

 
No fewer than 50 persons have been confirmed dead from the suicide bomb attack at a market in Sabon Gari in Damboa local government area in Borno state yesterday, August 11th.

Over 43 persons sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Biu, Borno state.
 
According to Reuters, the explosion struck at around 1.30 p.m. (8.30 p.m. ET) in the town of Sabon Gari in Borno state, which is the heartland of the Islamist militant group.

"So far, 52 people are injured, 47 dead persons have been removed from the market," Umar Kidda, a member of a civilian viligante group, told Reuters by phone.

The witnessed disclosed that bodies being taken away, said the market was busy when the explosion occurred.

A military source who declined to be named said around 50 people had been killed.

Borno State Police Commissioner, Mr Aderemi Opadokun, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri without giving the exact casualty figure, said the injured victims had been evacuated to Biu General Hospital for treatment.

He said: “Reports we just received indicates that at about 14:45 hours, there was an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) explosion at Sabon Gari market in Damboa LGA.

“A suspected male suicide bomber who strapped the IED around his body, detonated it in the open and many people died and about 30 injured.”

 
Opadokun who advised communities to form vigilante groups to prevent insurgency attacks, said investigation was in progress on the issue.
