A man has been brutally beaten and nearly burnt alive after he was caught allegedly stealing car battery in Calabar.

A suspected car battery thief got more than what he could chew yesterday after he was beaten severely by an angry mob at Akai Effa, Calabar, Cross River State. He was about to be set ablaze before policemen rescued him from the clutches of death.
He was said to have been chased on Monday, but escaped. On Tuesday afternoon, he went back to a location close to where he had been chased on Monday, and was caught this time.
After being severely beaten with hands, stones and sticks, the mob had poured fuel on him and dragged a tyre from a nearby compound to burn him alive.
He was, however, lucky that security operatives came before being set ablaze. He was eventually taken away.
