Dr Mervat Mohamed Talaat, a pregnant doctor suffered a miscarriage while helping deliver a patient’s baby – but continued the operation.

According to Metro UK, Dr Mervat Mohamed Talaat was performing a caesarean surgery on her patient at Luxor General Hospital in Cairo, Egypt.

She experienced pain and started bleeding, but insisted she would complete the procedure.

After delivering the baby, she handed responsibility to another doctor and was taken out of the operation theatre.

Dr Talaat, who works at the obstetrics and gynaecology department, was then transferred to another room at the hospital for treatment.

She suffered an ectopic pregnancy, where the foetus grows outside the uterus and eventually leads to a miscarriage, Al Arabiya report.

Doctors at the hospital suspect pressure at work led to a deterioration in her condition.

On the day of the tragedy Dr Talaat had three surgeries scheduled, local media report.

There were calls in Egypt for the doctor’s act to be recognised by the state.

Chairman of the Luxor Doctors Syndicate Ahmed Hamza said the group would honour Dr Talaat for her selflessness.
