A video has shown the moment a man was horrifically trampled to death while trying to take a selfie with a wild elephant in India.

The man, Ashok Bharti, 50, approached the lone animal near Kuanrmunda, in the eastern state of Odisha.

But when he tried to take a photo, the elephant charged at him. The terrifying moment was captured on video, filmed by witnesses who were a safe distance away.

Mr Bharti tripped over while attempting to flee the elephant, but was trampled by the rampaging animal.

An ambulance rushed to the scene, but Mr Bharti tragically died on the way to hospital.

The shocking incident happened on Saturday morning when forest rangers tried to rescue the elephant, who was disorientated after becoming separated from their herd.

Philip Sahu, assistant conservator of forests, said: ‘Forest officials were trying to chase the elephant back to the herd when Bharti came too close to the animal to take a selfie.

‘The animal was nervous as it had strayed away from his family and when the man came too close to it, the elephant in its rescue attacked him.’
