In 2013, Haiyan, the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines, killed more than 6,300 people and displaced 4.1 million.

Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman of the Philippine department of social welfare and development thanked Nigerian authorities while receiving the sum from Buba Tekune, charge d’ affairs of the Ministry of foreign affairs of Nigeria.

In his turn, Buba Tekune speaking on behalf of Nigerian government expressed desire to help those people heavily affected by the devastating effect of the typhoon Yolanda.

The sum given by Nigeria is expected to be spent on water tanks for families relocated to permanent sites and other rehabilitative efforts.

Philippines and Nigeria have maintained very cordial and friendly relations, since 1963.

There are 8,000 Filipinos in Nigeria who work mostly in construction and engineering firms while around 4,500 Nigerians stay in the Philippines to study, according to Tekune.
