Elena Kordyukova, a 39-year-old Russian mother faces 20 years in jail after allegedly killing her two sons with rat poison and attempting to murder her daughter in the same gruesome manner.
According to
The Sun UK, the woman from Ekaterinburg in Russia, told police her children had a genetic disease and she wanted to get rid of them so she could start a new family without health problems.
She was detained after her surviving child, a little boy named Ilya, 8, was found to have traces of a potentially lethal medicine in his body, which he had not been prescribed.
He was saved by doctors but investigators then exhumed her three other children who had all died young.
Her daughter and two sons had suffered from a rare genetic disease but forensic experts established that two of them had taken overdoses of Warfarin before they died.
The prescription drug – originally developed as a rat poison and also used to kill vampire bats – has medical uses but it was not prescribed for her children.
It is unclear how she obtained the drug which is an anticoagulant and is taken to treat blood clots.
Kordyukova at first denied killing her children who suffered from atypical haemolytic-uremic syndrome, an extremely rare life threatening disease.
The genetic illness causes the formation of clots in small blood vessels throughout the body leading to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and death.
The Russian mother faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty
But a court was told that she later confessed to murder and attempted murder, saying she “had tried to cure them, but it was easier to get rid of this burden and try to give birth to new children who were healthy”.
Psychiatrists found she was “completely normal” and aware of her crimes, the judge in Ekaterinburg heard.
She has been detained since 2015 and faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted.
The girl Alexandra, known as Sasha, and the boys, Maxim and Misha, all died aged under three.
All were exhumed, and traces of Warfarin were found in Maxim and Misha’s remains, but Sasha’s had deteriorated too much to allow a check although Elena admitted giving her the medicine.
Ilya was found to have taken 30 doses of the drug while in hospital, even though medics had not prescribed it.
Prosecutors say his mother gave him the medicine originally invented as a rat poison.
He was left in a “grave” condition but survived.
The detained woman’s husband Andrey – now caring for Ilya – says he cannot believe his wife killed any of the children, describing her as a “loving mother”.
Investigators say he was unaware of his wife’s alleged crimes.
He said he cannot believe she planned anything sinister, despite her confession.
“She is a wonderful mother. I saw how caring she was for the children.”
The children had been acutely ill, and she had tried to save them, he said.
