According to Daily Star UK, Japan has been rocked by two earthquakes in one hour amid fears the Big One is imminent.

The quakes – of 5.1 and 5.5 magnitudes – have struck south of the country, east of the island Tanegashima.

They struck within one hour of each other, with the first hitting at 10.40pm local time, followed by another at 11.45pm.

It was almost felt as far as Hiroshima, a Japense city which was devastated by an atomic bomb during WW2.

The news comes after Daily Star Online revealed fears a magnitude 9 "super-gigantic" earthquake is imminent.

No reports have surfaced of any injuries due to the low strength of the quakes.

But experts are warning the country is due a quake that will be worse than the one that caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Tokyo disaster experts at the Earthquake Research Committee predict a 70% chance of a magnitude 8 to 8.6 earthquake hitting the northern-most island of Hokkaido.

Although today's quakes have struck south of the country, Japan sits on top of the deadly Ring of Fire.

This is a huge belt running around the Pacific Ocean which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
