Power generation in Nigeria yesterday suffered a major setback following a fire incident that led to a halt in the transmission of power across major parts of the country.

Nigerians yesterday evening took to several social media platforms to discuss the unprecedented blackout experienced in some parts of the country around 10pm yesterday.

According to reports gathered, there were intermittent incidents of low current, instability in electricity suppy and eventual power outage in several parts of the South-western region.

The Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing was prompted to issue a press release to calm tension across the country as Nigerians feared the national grid had collapsed in the New Year.

According to its tweets, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transport Company Ltd suffered a fire incident on its Escravos Lagos Pipeline System on Tuesday, 2nd of January, 2018.

The incident required a shutdown of the pipeline supplying gas to Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotisho NIPP and other power stations.
