As Big As A Child: See The Giant Tumour Doctors Removed From A Patient's Ovaries In Hospital (Photo)

Doctors were left quite stunned after they were able to remove a really huge tumour from a woman's ovaries in hospital.

The patient is recovering well after the growth was removed

Sonia Lopez, a 57-year-old Costa Rican woman's carried around a giant ovarian tumour for years.

According to Daily Star UK, Sonia Lopez was first warned that she had the growth inside her eight years ago, but refused to be operated on for personal reasons.

The woman’s tumour grew to around 5.3st over time, before doctors finally removed it in a grisly operation.

Doctors made the decision to remove the tumour when it grew to the weight of a 10-year-old child.

Sonia had also began struggling with breathing, which was another cause for concern.

Surgeon Pablo Sibaja said: "This kind of tumour has the characteristic that once it is there, it started growing in a disorganised way and very fast."

Sonia hopes she can live a normal life now that the growth has been removed

After cutting the growth out at Hospital Mexico in San Jose, they described it as the biggest that the ward had ever seen.

The gruesome surgery took two hours and was carried out by six experienced surgeons.

Her tumour isn’t quite world record-breaking though, as a 37-year-old Chinese patient once carried a 17st tumour around with him.

Despite the magnitude of the operation, the patient is said to be recovering well.

She told the media: "It is like being born again, like coming back to reality. I am in the recovery process.

“Doctors have already explained to me that it is going to be long but how I feel now compared with how I felt before... it is like a trip between the sun and Earth."

Sonia now hopes that she will be able to “keep on with (her) normal life) and “keep on working”.
