A university hospital has been engulfed in flames which tore through the "mother and baby" unit, causing quite a commotion.

The hospital caught fire

According to a report by Daily Syar UK, a serious fire outbreak engulfed the mother and baby unit at University Hospital in Coventry this morning.

All the expectant mums and patients on several wards were hastily asked to leave the building and moved elsewhere as part of an evacuation.

Dramatic footage from the scene showed huge fumes of smoke billowing from the facility.

Eight fire engines attended to the blaze as people were urged to stay away.

And the hospital urgently asked staff to make sure all the fire doors and windows were closed.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: “We currently have eight fire crews and a hydraulic platform in attendance at University Hospital Coventry.

“There is a confirmed fire in an extractor flue from a boiler room.

“A phased evacuation has taken place and no injuries are reported.”

Local resident Neil Twigger said he could hear crackling and smell fire.

“I popped outside at about 9am and could hear a crackling sound," he told the Coventry Telegraph.

"So I walked to the side of my garage and could see and smell the fire licking up the side of the chimneys at the side of the hospital behind the maternity unit.”

After the fire, a message was sent to hospital staff from Chief Operating Officer Lisa Kelly.

It read: "A small fire in an outbuilding adjacent to the west wing is now under control, with fire brigade on site.

"Those patients in areas affected have been moved safely to other areas.

"No further evacuations are needed.

"Please note we are not declaring a major incident but please be aware the fire service appliances are still on site and patients may ask you questions.

"Please help us be reassuring to patients and staff on site and also, can you ensure that all fire doors and windows are closed in line with out fire safety policy."
