For the second time in five months, an infant has been left in a baby box at a northwestern Indiana volunteer fire station.
Indiana's Safe Haven Law allows babies under 30-days-old to be dropped off to any police department, fire station or hospital without any criminal charges.
So-called 'baby boxes' popping up in fire stations are intended to make the difficult decision easier for mothers.
First installed about two years ago, the padded, climate-controlled box allows a mother to relinquish her newborn anonymously.
After a pager alerted Lt. Chuck Kohler, of the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department, near Michigan City, to the presence of a baby in the box on Sunday night - the fireman was on the scene in less than a minute.
The girl, named Grace by the firemen, appeared healthy and was taken to a hospital for care.
She will then be placed in the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services.
The system certainly seems to be having the desired result after another baby girl was safely rescued having been left in the box on November 7.
'There are some mums that will go to the hospital,' Monica Kelsey, the founder and president of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, told KTXS.
'There are some mums that will walk into this fire station and hand that child over.
'But we also know that there are some mums that don't want their faces seen and this box is the reason why it's working.'
