Woman Finds a Spider Hiding in Her Ear Canal Where it Had Even Woven a Web

A woman had the fright of her life when the persistent scratching noise from inside her ear canal turned out to be from a spider that had been inhabiting there for a long time.

Doctors used medicated ear drops to put the spider to sleep before extracting the insect

Li Meng, a 25-year-old woman who sought medical attention for noises that she could hear inside her head, had to have a live spider removed from her left ear canal.

The Chinese woman had put off calling the doctor at first because she was afraid that the scratching noise that she heard at night was possibly evil spirits. But the pain became so much that painkillers stopped helping.

She eventually consulted doctors at the Xiamen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. An ear, nose and throat specialist discovered that a spider had actually weaved a web in her ear canal and was resting on her eardrum.

Each attempt made to remove it caused it to react violently, resulting in more pain for Meng. Doctor Chen Zhaoyue eventually pacified the spider with drops of an unspecified medicine and pulled it out with tweezers.

Grateful Meng said: "I was the only one who could hear the sounds. I was confused, I even went to a temple to pray but it didn’t help."

She revealed that she had been hiking with her boyfriend and it’s likely the spider crawled into her ear while she was climbing a tree.
