An unfortunate mobile phone salesman was tied up and beaten by an angry crowd in Cixi City, China, after he was mistaken for a baby snatcher.

The People's Daily Online reports that the man had reportedly barged into the home of a young mother who was feeding her son at the time and refused to leave until she bought one of his phones on May 23.

Friends of the woman thought the man was trying to kidnap her baby and dragged him out onto the street and tied him up.

The mother, surnamed Fu, claimed the man had barged into her home at around 2pm on May 23.

She says she was sitting on her bed feeding her eight-month-old son when he entered the room. Fu claims that the man, surnamed Xie, was trying to sell her an iPhone.

She told reporters: '[He] saw I was feeding my child but he came in anyway. I told him to leave but he sat down on the bed next to me, waving the iPhone in front of me.'

Fu says that she instantly panicked because she thought the man wanted to steal her baby. She ran to her next door neighbours and called for help.

According to Chinese media, Fu managed to get the attention of her family however later feinted due to the shock of the event.

An eyewitness told reporters Xie had been chased by two men on electric scooters. The same eyewitness said he had tried to run from Gushi road to Yanpu North Road but was caught.

Fu's friends, who thought Xie had been a child snatcher, were said to have dragged Xie onto the street and tied him up using a rope. Onlookers filmed the scene, according to the report, and some of them also cursed Xie.

In a video clip emerged on Chinese media, the man can be seen tied up with rope lying on the floor and surrounded by an angry mob. The angry group drag him through the street before suspending him from a tree while others look on.

Then police arrived shortly, untied Xie and took him away. The local Cixi Public Security Bureau confirmed their findings from the investigation in a statement.

They confirmed that the 53-year-old man surnamed Xie illegally entered the woman's home to try and sell her a mobile phone.

They said that a 23-year-old man surnamed Ren mistakenly thought that the man was trying to drug the woman to steal her baby and so tied Xie up.

They confirmed that Xie was not a kidnapper nor had he drugged the woman.

Police say they detained both of the men. Ren was fined 200 yuan (£20) for assault and kept in detention for five days.

While Xie was also detained for five days for illegally entering a property.
