Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has said God used former military Head of State Sani Abacha to create the state, adding that without Abacha, Ekiti would not exist.

Ekiti was created on October 1, 1996, out of the old Ondo State during Abacha's military rule.

The governor said the state owes a debt of gratitude to the former leader.

He spoke on Wednesday at the Ekiti at 30 Future Summit in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

He said Ekiti men and women have done well in many areas, including education, public administration, commerce, agriculture, culture and national service, in the old Western region and later in Ondo State.

According to him, leaders pushed hard and made a strong case for the creation of the state so the hopes of the people could be better pursued.

He said the state owes an eternal debt of gratitude to its founding fathers, traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals, academics, political actors and women's groups whose sacrifices made it possible.

Oyebanji then said some people will not like what he is about to say, but it is the truth.

He said Ekiti owes thanks to Gen. Sani Abacha, who was Head of State when the state was created.

He said without Abacha, they would not be here, and that Kabiyisi can tell what they went through, but God used Abacha and they are grateful.
