Humiliation: Man Arraigned for Beating Up a Police Officer in Broad Daylight

A man who had the nerve to beat up a police officer in a very public place, is being made to pay for the act of assault.

Muyiwa Sanni, a 35-year-old businessman, who allegedly beat up a police officer was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Sanni, whose residential address was not disclosed, is being tried for breach of peace, unlawful entering and assault.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Essien Ndarake, the accused committed the offences on Dec. 5 at the departure hall of Muritala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

He said that the accused assaulted a policeman, Sgt. Stephen Azegbe, attached to Airport Police Command while he was performing his lawful duty. “The accused assaulted the complainant by beating him,” he said.

Ndarake said that the accused unlawfully entered the departure hall of MMIA without permission from Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

“The accused was found loitering in the departure hall which was restricted area without reasonable cause or permission from FAAN.

“The complainant and other aviation security officials attached to MMIA accosted the accused, asked him to leave the departure hall to the waiting room because he was neither a staff nor a passenger.

“But he refused, as the complainant was trying to move him away, he got angry and descended on him through beating,” he said.

The offences contravened sections 166 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The section 172 prescribes three years jail term for offenders. The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, adjourned the case to Jan. 12 for mention.
