A 57-year-old tourist has died after being blown by the jet engines of a Boeing 737, Metro UK reports.

The woman was injured just after the plane took off from the infamous Princess Juliana International Airport, on St Maarten, in the Caribbean.

The airport is known for how low planes pass over the nearby Maho beach and the woman was thought to have been holding a fence with her family while watching the aircraft take-off yesterday.

According to the NZ Herald, the victim, from New Zealand, died a short time after being hurt at approximately 6pm.

Rolando Brison, who is St Maarten’s director of tourism, confirmed he had spoken to the woman’s family.

He said: ‘I met with the family of the deceased this evening and while they recognised that what they did was wrong, through the clearly visible danger signs, they regret that risk they took turned out in the worst possible way.

‘At this time I only wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones while we continue to investigate what transpired just hours ago.’

Tourists have often visited Maho beach so they can film planes passing above their heads.

Plenty of videos have been posted online show aircraft passing as low as 100ft.

There are signs warning members of the public not to get to close to the runway.
