Timothy George Simpkins, 18, is suspected of shooting a teacher and students at school

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a school shooting has left a teacher and student fighting for their lives on Wednesday in the US.

18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins allegedly opened fire at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, before turning himself into police.

The shooting was millimetres from proving fatal for English teacher Calvin Pettitt, 25, who took a bullet in the back, breaking his ribs and collapsing a lung.

A 15-year-old student was also left in critical condition and a teenage girl suffered a small abrasion from the .45 caliber gunfire.

Simpkins' lawyer drove him to the police station hours later at around 1:15pm.

Mr Pettitt's sister, Grace Rinearson described news of the bullet narrowly missing his aorta as "one of the scariest mornings of my life".

She tweeted: "Feeling extremely blessed and thankful. Please hold you loved ones close, this is a crazy world we're living in."

Alleged shooter Simpkins has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a gun and is being held in custody with bail set at $75,000 (£55,000).

SWAT teams proceeded to raid his family's home in Arlington, local media reports.

At the time of the shooting, all 1,700 school students were evacuated.

The gun police suspect to have been used in the attack, was found two miles from the high school and is now being examined for ballistics testing, law enforcement officials say.

Assistant Arlington police chief Kevin Kolbye said: "This is not a random act of violence. This is not somebody attacking our school.

"This is a student, we believe right now, preliminary, that it was a student that got into a fight and drew a weapon.

Investigators said that a fight had broken out in a classroom on the second floor of the high school which prompted the suspect to reach for his gun at 9:15am.

Kolbye said resources responded to the shooting had been split following threats made on social media of possible shootings at other schools in the area.

Kolbye warned false threats of violence will be met by the fully force of the law. He said: "I want the message to be out there that this is not something to continue. We will investigate you.

"The federal government partners will also be able to investigate you if you’re not living in our city and will bring you to a successful prosecution."
