The pontiff passed away on Monday morning, weeks after being discharged from a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia.
The cause of death of Pope Francis has been revealed.
Recall that the 88-year-old head of the Roman Catholic Church died yesterday.
The cause of death has been linked to him suffering a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, the Vatican announced on Monday.
According to his official death certificate released by the Holy See Press Office, the pontiff passed away on Monday morning, weeks after being discharged from a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia.
Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, certified the cause of death as a stroke, which resulted in coma and cardiocirculatory collapse. The death was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography.
The medical report disclosed that Pope Francis had a history of acute respiratory failure caused by multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, hypertension, and Type II diabetes — conditions that likely complicated his recovery.
Dr. Arcangeli stated: “I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above.”
The Vatican earlier announced that Pope Francis would be buried without adornments or titles, in keeping with his request for simplicity. Tributes have poured in from world leaders and religious figures, with many highlighting his humility and commitment to peace.
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari called for peace in Gaza as a lasting tribute to the late Pope, while Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu described him as “full of humanity.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church since his election in 2013, and was the first pontiff from Latin America.
