Two persons have lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred in the Ijapo area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday.

The accident involved a Nissan car, an unregistered truck and a motorcycle.

The two victims, who were said to be brothers, were riding on the motorcycle when a speeding truck rammed into the car, the motorcycle and other nearby vehicles, killing them instantly.

Two other persons involved in the accident sustained injuries.

The incident happened in front of the headquarters of the Vehicle Inspection Office, where officials were conducting routine checks at the time.

Following the crash, angry residents attempted to attack the VIO officers present at the scene, but police intervened promptly to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

A commercial driver whose vehicle was badly damaged in the crash narrowly escaped death, recounting how he had stepped away from his vehicle moments before the truck ploughed through several vehicles and motorcycles in the area.

The Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed that the accident was caused by brake failure.

The state police also confirmed the incident, stating that the truck collided with the motorcycle and the Nissan vehicle from the rear.

The remains of the deceased were deposited at the Ondo State University Teaching Hospital morgue, while the vehicles involved were recovered to the station for further inspection.

The accident comes just days after two people were also killed on Monday when a trailer and a Toyota Corolla collided at Kwang community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, with five persons involved in that crash.
