Nine people have died in a crash on the Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident happened on Monday at about 4:55pm at the Bethel area along the Ijebu Ode/Ore axis.

It involved a white Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Delta Line, with registration number 14B-299DT, and a white Sino Truck belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd, with registration number AAB162XD.

The Ogun State sector command spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said in a statement that nine people were involved, made up of three men and six women, and all of them died.

He said it was raining at the time and the road was wet, though it was a paved road. Early findings point to speeding as the likely cause of the crash.

FRSC rescue officers got to the scene within two minutes of the report, arriving at 4:58pm.

The bodies were taken to the General Hospital Morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese police.

The state Corps Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to take extra care when it rains, obey speed limits and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

He added that speeding is even more dangerous on wet roads because tyres grip less and visibility drops, making it harder to control or stop a vehicle.

The FRSC also sent its condolences to the families of the victims and asked all road users to put safety first.
