The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected gun-runner after recovering two AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 42 rounds of live ammunition from a commercial vehicle in Ilorin.
The suspect, identified as Umaru M., was picked up during a stop-and-search operation along the Alapa-Okolowo axis of the state capital.
The weapons were found inside a bag in the vehicle.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said Umaru first denied owning the bag.
She said further investigation led him to admit that he was carrying the firearms and ammunition.
According to the police, he also named another suspected member of a gun-running network, Dan Yarubawa.
The statement said Dan Yarubawa allegedly gave him the weapons to deliver to another person, Dahiru, outside Kwara State.
The command said efforts have been stepped up to arrest the others linked to the case, and the investigation will also try to find out how far the suspected network goes.
The recovery comes as the command stresses intelligence-led and proactive operations to stop crime in the state.
Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi said the command remains committed to protecting lives and property across Kwara.
He urged residents to give the police timely and credible information to support security operations, and promised that the command will keep up its vigilance to stop threats to public safety.
