The Kano State Government has ordered civil servants who have reached the retirement age or completed the required years of service to leave their offices immediately and hand over their duties and government property to their immediate subordinates.
The order is contained in Circular No. 10/2026, dated October 6, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Abba A. Danguguwa, for the Head of the Civil Service.
It was sent to permanent secretaries, commissioners, heads of government agencies, boards and commissions, and other senior officials.
The government said it noticed that some workers were still doing official work after reaching retirement age or completing their years of service.
It said this goes against the tradition of the state civil service, which allows for a smooth handover when officers retire.
It added that staying beyond the retirement limit breaks the State Civil Service Rules and other regulations.
The circular called the act of overstaying a direct breach and an aberration of the rules.
It told all affected officers to leave the service at once and hand over their documents, government property and responsibilities.
Accounting officers, including permanent secretaries and chief executives, as well as directors of administration and personnel management, were told to make sure the order is followed immediately.
The government also warned that any officer found helping or allowing a retired officer to stay on will face disciplinary action under the Civil Service Rules.
