AAU Lecturer Dies in Hotel After Private Meeting With Woman

A senior lecturer at the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room after meeting a 21-year-old sex worker, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The incident happened on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was reported that the lecturer checked into the hotel with the woman and died shortly after they were together.

The Edo State Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed this on Tuesday and said three people have been arrested.

She said the police got a report at about 8pm on October 5, 2026, that Uwuigbe had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and hired the woman.

According to her, he sent the woman to buy water, and when she came back, she found him lying dead in the room.

The hotel owner, the manager and the woman are in police custody while investigation continues.

His body has been taken to the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

The university's Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, told a news outlet that Uwuigbe is a staff member of the school, but the incident happened outside the campus.

He said it was part of the lecturer's private life and that the woman is not a student of the school.
