Police Arrest 67 in Akwa Ibom for Armed Robbery, Cultism

Scores of suspects have been arrested by the Akwa Ibom Police Command over several criminal offences perpetrated in the state.

 
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested 67 persons over their involvement in armed robbery and cultism within the last 16 days.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Bala Elkana, said in Uyo on Friday that the gang leader of a notorious armed robbery syndicate, one Miracle Etukudoh, (20), residing at Effiat Offot Village in Uyo Local Government Area, was arrested on December 7.

He explained that the gang specialised in robbing people of their mobile phones, handbags, cash and other personal effects around Uyo and its environs.

According to him, during investigation, three other gang members were arrested and one locally-made pistol was recovered in the house of one Uko Edem ‘m’ of Ikot Oduot Village in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.

Other items recovered from the suspects are wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp; different types of mobile phones snatched from people; female handbags; electronic devices, and more.

Elkana said that all the suspects had confessed to belonging to Redskin cult and added that the case had been charged to court.

Others arrested between December 9 and 10 are one Ernest Bassey, ‘m’ of 4, Eyo-Abasi Estate, Oron and six others for converging on Isangedighi Lane, Oron for a secret meeting.

One locally-made pistol and photograph of suspect with other group members were said to have been recovered from the suspects.

The PPRO said that 12 suspects were also arrested by the police in Abak Town following a credible intelligence, even as he identified items recovered as military belts, binoculars, Navy beret.

Elkana said that the suspects confessed to be members of a secret cult engaged in various crimes in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and its environs and added that both cases had been charged to court.

“Those arrested on December 11 at about 11.05am in Oruk Anam LGA are one Uyoattah Jacob ‘m’ and 100 level student of Akwa Ibom State University (Ata Obio Akpa Campus), for cultism,” he added.

The state police spokesman pointed out that one locally-made single-barrel pistol was recovered from him, noting that the case had also been charged to court.

Elkana further said, “It could also be recalled that on 3/11/2017 a combined team of police operatives and Operation Thunder, Akwa Ibom State, stormed Ikwe Village in Onna LGA and arrested 20 suspected cult members of two different groups, aka ‘Isakaba’ and ‘Ekpat’ cult.

“Suspects arrested are Victor Udofia ‘m’ aged 50, who confessed to be a leader of Isakaba cult group and his gang members as Ezekiel Akpan Dickson ‘m’, aged 23, Monday Akpan ‘m’, aged 40, Emmanuel Ukoh ‘m’, aged 34, Udo Tom ‘m’ aged 35, Sunday Ekpo ‘m’ aged 35, Joseph Robinson ‘m’, aged 30, Anthony Akpan ‘m’, aged 27, Nsikan Dickson ‘m’, aged 34, Sunshine Jacob ‘m’, aged 20 and Samuel Robson ‘m’, aged 25.”
