Many people were feared killed on Friday in Kinere, Simba and Shure villages, in the Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State after some herdsmen clashed with residents of the areas.

It was learnt that many houses were set ablaze by the herdsmen during the attack on the villages.

A Punch correspondent gathered that trouble started when the herdsmen took their cows to a pond in Kinere village to drink from the pond, said to be the community’s only source of water.

A villager, who had gone to fetch water at the pond, saw the situation and confronted the herders. The villager was said to have been attacked and injured by the herdsmen.

Other villagers reportedly mobilised to the scene in a reprisal and killed some of the herdsmen. The herders, thereafter, invaded the community, killing many people and setting fire to houses.

Not done, they allegedly went to the neigbouring villages of Simba and Shure, and unleashed terror on the residents. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the incident to a correspondent on the telephone on Sunday, but said the number of casualties had yet to be ascertained.

He said, “The situation is under control. We are still addressing the situation and monitoring is on. Some houses were burnt.
“The incident was caused as a result of a pond in Kinere community used for drinking. The herders took their cows to drink there and unfortunately there was a misunderstanding, which resulted in fracas.”
