According to a report by Daily Star UK, a teenage boy has died after being crushed by a trolley of frozen chicken outside a KFC restaurant.
A metal cage trolley fell off the back of a delivery truck when its safety breaks suddenly failed and hit the boy, it is reported.
Horrified customers at the restaurant in East London, South Africa rushed to the 13-year-old lad’s aid.
He managed to sit up and start to regain consciousness, but minutes later he collapsed from his severe injuries.
The boy died at the scene on South Africa’s southeastern coast shortly after the incident on Monday.
South African media outlet Daily Dispatch reports the boy was part of a group of homeless children who had approached the truck asking drivers for cash-in-hand work.
Fumanekile Gxasheka said he and his colleague had turned the boy away “but he decided to stick around and watched us working”.
He said: "We told him nicely we didn’t have money or job for him and that he should just leave us alone and continued with our work, but he decided to stick around and watched us working.”
The trolley had been loaded with KFC pieces, flour and frozen chicken, and was about to be lowered to the ground when the breaks failed.
Witnesses heard Mr Gxasheka and his colleague shout at the boy to get out of the way, but it was too late.
A KFC customer who tried to save the boy said: “The boy managed to sit on his buttocks and talked briefly with the people who were helping him but collapsed seconds later and died.”
A KFC spokesman told Daily Dispatch the incident is being investigated by police.
