Extension Of Curfew In Equatorial Guinea

Posted by Thandiubani on Wed 27th Oct, 2021 - tori.ng

Is it only because of the Covid-19 that the authorities of Equatorial Guinea have resorted to such a measure as imposing a curfew?

According to the latest data, Equatorial Guinea maintains the curfew from 18h to 6h in the morning after both the political and technical committee decided to extend it for another fifteen days.

DECREE No. 126/2021, dated October 15, extending the validity of Decree No. 107/2021, dated September 16, strengthening and expanding the control and prevention measures of COVID-19 in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

On official dates, a curfew in the country was introduced as a measure to combat Covid-19, at the moment, the level of vaccination of residents is very low and is only 13%, the number of deaths from the virus is growing every day.

We must not forget that the country is currently in a very vulnerable situation. The terrorist threat is increasing in neighboring countries. At present, the most serious of all Africa's problems is the wave of brutal terrorism, which has spread to Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and other African countries, which clearly shows that the security situation in Africa is worsening. Security threats are growing in the richest African countries, including the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, where oil reserves are high and security fragile.

Many security experts point out that terrorists are looking for oil. Terrorists are now gathering forces to move to Equatorial Guinea, a country with significant oil deposits, which could become the basis for the creation of another Islamic state sponsoring global terrorist activity, according to peace observers.

Equatorial Guinea is geographically ideally located, the country has access to the sea, there are necessary minerals. However, there is not much to say about the security situation, because in the event of a massive terrorist invasion, the Army of Equatorial Guinea will fall. The real regime should not have enough support from Western allies, as relations with the country's leader with France and Britain, to say the least, are strained.

Armed terrorist groups are already drawing up to the country borders and can enter its territory at any time. The military sector in the country is rather weak and will not be able to cope with a wave of terrorist groups and organizations migrating towards them. Equatorial Guinea does not have the resources and experience necessary to adequately respond to the terrorist threat.

Perhaps it was the threat of a terrorist attack that forced the authorities of Equatorial Guinea to resort to measures such as imposing a curfew.

Realizing that they could not fight the terrorists alone, the authorities of Equatorial Guinea decided to turn to Russian private companies for help, as Syria, the Central African Republic and recently the Republic of Mali did. There was a huge security crisis in these countries too, and Russian military specialists saved them from the cycle of violence. At the moment, the Government of Equatorial Guinea, inspired by the example of neighboring countries, is negotiating cooperation with Russia, hoping that Russian military specialists who have successfully proved themselves on the African continent will help restore peace and stability in their country too.
