Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has debunked viral reports claiming she was behind the re-arrest of X influencer Big Ayo. Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has denied reports that she was behind the re-arrest of Big Ayo, an X (previously Twitter) influencer, calling them untrue and deceptive.
After the accusation went viral on social media, the actress responded quickly on Tuesday. She stated that at the time the report broke, she was actively working on a movie set and had no role in any such action.
“Arrest Ayo as how, this is untrue information. I'm filming on the set. Please disregard. It's all love from me; I didn't get Ayo or anyone else imprisoned. Thank you, and please take this down, Abraham said.
Big Ayo was detained once more at the actress's request, according to a now-deleted post by an X user named Khan. Discussions on Abraham's prior interactions with social media trolls were rekindled as the post swiftly garnered popularity online.
However, another X user, Prince Adeshina, debunked the allegation, explaining that the actress was at a film location and had no connection to any arrest. Abraham acknowledged this clarification by retweeting the statement.
"To draw the public's attention, Toyin Abraham was at a movie location and did not arrest Ayo. We urge the general public to consider the circulating report as fake news,” Adeshina wrote, adding that the originator of the claim might be required to provide evidence.
The reappearance of the claim is connected to a high-profile incident that occurred in July 2024, when Abraham took legal action against individuals accused of cyberbullying her. At the time, an X user named Jeffery alleged that his mother had been arrested over trolling accusations. The actress later clarified that it was not Jeffery’s mother but his associate, Big Ayo, who was apprehended for persistently abusing her and making offensive remarks about her family online.
Big Ayo had previously shared a contentious message accusing the actress of using funds allegedly linked to political support to finance personal matters involving her husband. The post sparked widespread outrage and prompted Abraham to involve law enforcement authorities.
Defending her actions at the time, the actress stated that she would not tolerate insults directed at her family and expressed emotional distress over the sustained online harassment. She emphasised that her response was necessary to protect her dignity and that of her loved ones.
Abraham's struggles with trolls online have been partly attributed to her public support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections. Her endorsement generated significant backlash on social media, with critics frequently targeting her with personal attacks.
Despite the renewed controversy, the actress reiterated her stance of peace and urged the public to disregard the false reports, reaffirming that she harbours no ill will toward anyone involved.
The incident brings to light the ongoing problem of false information on social media and the increasing demand in Nigeria's entertainment industry for responsible digital participation.
