The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of 13-year-old JSS 2 student Maimuna Sani Salisu, following conflicting accounts surrounding the circumstances of her death at St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.

The command disclosed that it received a petition dated June 17, 2026, from Nakudu Law Partners, legal representatives of Maimuna's mother, Mrs Nusaiba Rabiu Dan Sheriff, requesting a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to the petition, school authorities informed Maimuna's parents on June 13 that she had fallen ill and was taken to International Clinic, Kano, for treatment. Her elder sister was reportedly dispatched to the hospital immediately, but was informed upon arrival that the teenager had already been confirmed dead.

She was buried the following day in accordance with Islamic rites.

However, the family raised concerns over conflicting explanations regarding the cause of death.

While school authorities reportedly attributed her death to a fatal asthma attack triggered by arriving late for mosque prayers, the petition cited other accounts alleging that she had been punished by senior students through flogging and prolonged kneeling for refusing to sweep, an ordeal the family believes may have worsened her condition and contributed to her death.

The family is now demanding a comprehensive investigation to establish the true cause of death and ensure accountability where warranted.

Responding to the petition, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori directed that the matter be handled diligently and transparently, in line with due process.

A Special Investigation Panel has since been constituted, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Shehu Idris of the Criminal Investigation Department, with officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice included to provide legal oversight.

The command said investigations began immediately, with three teachers, three senior female students, and two female witnesses already cooperating with investigators.

Statements have been obtained, and medical, forensic, and other evidentiary procedures are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police assured the public that the investigation would be thorough, impartial, and transparent, stating that anyone found culpable would face appropriate legal consequences, while those cleared of wrongdoing would be exonerated accordingly.

The command pledged to make the panel's findings public upon conclusion of the investigation and appealed to anyone with relevant information to come forward, assuring confidentiality. It also extended condolences to Maimuna's family and offered prayers for her soul.
