9 Miners Die After Heavy Rain Floods Bauchi Mining Pit

Nine miners have died at a mining site in Nahuta Village, Gwana District, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, according to the state police command.

Police spokesman Nafiu Habib, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed this.

He said Kasim Abdulsalam, Purchase Manager of Zurfi Mining Company, reported on Sunday, September 27, 2026 that contract miners were working in Pit Three at about 7:45pm on September 25 when water flooded the pit after heavy rain around 3pm.

Some miners were saved, but one of them, named Abner M, was electrocuted.

He was rushed to General Hospital Kashere in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, where a doctor confirmed he was dead.

Habib said the DPO of Alkaleri led detectives to the site, where three water pump generators were draining the pit so the rest of the victims could be reached.

Inspector Salisu Isah of Gwana Outstation later reported that the remaining eight victims were brought out at about 6:20am on September 28.

They were taken to the same hospital, where a doctor confirmed all of them dead.

The dead are Hamidu Ali, 40, Saidu Abubakar, 29, and Jose Ukese, 28, all of Nasarawa State, Olije Abdulrazak, 25, of Kogi State, Musa Abdullahi, 29, Abdulrahman Mu'azu, 23, and Jafar Abbas, 24, all of Bauchi State, and Haruna Alkali, 30, of Kebbi State.

Habib said the bodies were released to relatives after post mortem for burial according to Islamic and Christian rites, and that investigation is ongoing.
