Dr Yunusa Tanko has formally accepted his appointment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He announced this in a statement on his online page on Thursday.

He said the role will let him contribute to political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across the North to support Obi's political project.

Tanko, who was National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, said the North remains central to the movement's dream of a New Nigeria.

He said he will work with the movement's structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters to deepen engagement and widen its base in the region.

Looking back on his two years as National Coordinator, Tanko said the movement made big progress in building its structures.

He said a National Advisory Council was set up to move the movement beyond election-time activism and turn it into a lasting institution.

He said the movement now has a presence in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, five Regional Coordinators and a Regional Collegiate Council, and coordination structures across 37 state areas and 774 Local Government Areas.

He also listed the Obidient.com platform for digital mobilisation and recruitment, and an election-results monitoring system linked to INEC's Results Viewing Portal, IReV.

He said grassroots structures were strengthened and engagement with communities and support groups grew across the country.

He credited all of this to the efforts of leaders, coordinators, volunteers and supporters.

Tanko also announced that Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo, will take over as National Coordinator.

He said the change is needed because his new job will need his full attention and presence across the North.

He said Dr Mo has been part of the movement from the start and has shown commitment to civic engagement, grassroots mobilisation and communication.

He urged leaders, coordinators and volunteers to back him.

Tanko thanked Obi for his confidence and appreciated everyone who supported the movement over the past two years.

He said the experience and structures built during his tenure will be a foundation for his new work in the North.
