Police begin aerial patrol in Abia

There was tension on Monday in Umuahia the capital of Abia State as the State Police Command started aerial and land surveillance ahead of the call for a sit-at-home protest by the Indigenous People of Biafra, Punch Metro reports.

Some residents who spoke with the Punch said they may not open their shops on Tuesday to avoid being attacked by IPOB members who were seen distributing flyers to shop owners in order to enforce the order.

It was learnt that some private schools in the state capital have asked parents to keep their children at home until Wednesday to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, who confirmed the exercise said his command has reviewed the security architecture of the state and reassured Abia citizens that their fundamental human rights would be jealously guarded as explicitly entrenched in the constitution.

He urged all residents in the state to go about their lawful business without entertaining any fear of molestation.

The police boss added that the surveillance is part of the command’s security arrangement.
