Irene Lanning and George Coffin are set to get to married after reuniting at a mutual friend's funeral
A couple who were childhood sweethearts are to finally marry - both aged 89.
Draughtsman George Coffin lived 200 yards away from office worker Irene Lanning and they dated when they were 17.
They both went on to marry partners who have died in the past few years then finally met again last year - at the funeral of a mutual friend.
They rekindled their romance and grandad of eight George popped the question six months later.
Now the pair - who have 12 grandchildren between them - are to marry later this month.
George from Sutton Coldfield, West Mids, said: "We realised we would be better together than apart and alone and our families are both happy.
“We went to different schools as kids but only lived 200 yards from each other and I took Irene out a few times.
“I thought then how nice and pretty she was but we both went on to meet and marry other people and enjoyed long marriages.
“It was ironic that we got together at the funeral of a mutual friend.
“Irene asked me to pop round to hers for a cup of tea. I wasted no time - at our age you can’t - and was there the next day and we went from there.”
Bride-to-be Irene said: "I realised the old magic was still there when I saw him after all those years as soon as we got chatting.
“We are as comfortable together now as we were when we were teenagers. It’s lovely.”
George’s son, Stuart, said: “We are all very happy for them.”
