Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have taken the driver of Kuje area council chairman, Abdul Iliya, Daily Trust reports.

A close aide to the council chairman, who preferred anonymity confided in our reporter yesterday that the incident happened on Sunday evening around Kilankwa village in Kwali area council.

He said the driver had gone to Gwagwalada to pick the council’s Peugeot 406 pilot car at a mechanic’s and proceeded to visit a friend at Kilankwa village when he ran into the gunmen.

He said the gunmen, said to be eight in number, riddled the car with bullets when he sighted them and attempted to make a u-turn.

The aide said the driver was taken to the gunmen’s hideout and that they placed a phone call to the special adviser to the council chairman to inform him that the driver had been kidnapped.

“When the chairman returned home at night, they told him about the incident. The car was abandoned at the scene until a team of policemen and one council driver went and drove it back to the chairman’s home,” he said.

Another source said the kidnappers were demanding for N30 million ransom for the driver’s release.

Our reporter gathered that the kidnappers were suspected to have gone to collect ransom on the son of a prominent person in Kwali kidnapped last Friday,  when the driver ran into them.

The chairman of Kuje area council, Alhaji Abdullahi D. Galadima, confirmed the kidnap of his driver, saying he had already reported the incident to the police.

When contacted, the FCT police command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Mamzah, requested for time to enable him find out about the incident from the Kuje police division.
