Femi Fani-Kayode
Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said Africa is getting closer to war and carnage following the recent wave of military coups in the continent.
In a post via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Kayode said the coups in Niger Republic and Gabon have shown that Africa is gradually sliding into war and chaos.
The former minister added that the threats of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the tensions in the West African sub-region are influenced by neo-colonialists and imperialists.
He said: “With events in Niger, Gabon etc., the threats of ECOWAS and the tensions in the West African sub-region between numerous nations, we are getting closer to that war and carnage by the day.”
The African Union (AU) has suspended Gabon following the takeover of power by the military in the country, days after the conduct of its 2023 presidential election.
TORI reports that the AU Commission for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, during its 1172nd meeting on the developments in Gabon on Thursday, reached the decision.
The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe of Burundi.
The Commission held that the country would not benefit or be part of any AU activities until democracy is restored.
