On Tuesday, employees of the Imo State Civil Service staged a protest in response to the assault on their colleague, Unegbu Chimaobi. Chimaobi was reportedly battered and attacked while performing his lawful duties in the office by Precious Izuogu, the son of Lady Rosemary Izuogu, the chairperson of the Local Government Service Commission.
The protesters, who were mostly information officers, moved through the Local Government Commission Office to the Head of Service office at the state secretariat in Owerri with placards bearing different inscriptions such as “Enough Is Enough,” “Civil Servants Are Not Slaves,” “We Demand Justice,” etc.
They decried what they alleged was ‘frequent battering’ of civil servants by the same Precious Izuogu.
Speaking on behalf of others, Mrs Bibian Okere, implored the Head of Service to look into the matter and ensure that Chimaobi Unegbu gets justice.
In his response, Barr. Raymond Ucheoma thanked the workers and informed the aggrieved officers of the various steps taken to ameliorate the situation, stating that Unegbu was taken to the hospital for treatment and had come to present himself to him (Head of Service).
He further reminded them of the importance of their office to the government and that their interests and welfare would not be taken for granted.
