The American Basketball Association (ABA) was founded in 1967 as a rival to the National Basketball Association (NBA), which had been established much earlier in 1946.

The ABA-NBA merger, finalized on June 17, 1976, was a significant event in the history of professional basketball in the United States. At the one x Bet bookmaker it is possible to make wagers on the modern NBA.

The American Basketball Association (ABA) was founded in 1967 as a rival to the National Basketball Association (NBA), which had been established much earlier in 1946. The ABA sought to attract fans with 4 distinct aspects:
  • a flashier style of play;
  • the introduction of the three-point line;
  • a red, white, and blue basketball;
  • and slam dunk contests.
Despite these innovations, the ABA struggled financially, leading to the eventual merger with the NBA. This competition is featured at the bookmaker one x Bet, where great wagers with huge winnings can be made.

Financial struggles and competitive pressures

The ABA faced significant financial difficulties throughout its existence. The league had smaller market teams and less lucrative television contracts compared to the NBA. By the mid-1970s, many ABA teams were either folding or relocating due to financial instability. There is secure live betting basketball that can be made on all modern teams of this sport too.

For example, the Virginia Squires and the San Diego Conquistadors disbanded in the years leading up to the merger. In contrast, the NBA was more stable, with established franchises in major markets and better revenue streams from TV deals. Speaking about streams, the secure live basketball betting from 1xBet also features lots of broadcasts to enjoy the best from this sport.

A fight for survival

The competition for talent between the 2 leagues drove up player salaries, creating further financial strain. High-profile players like Julius Erving (Dr. J) commanded significant salaries, and the 2 leagues engaged in bidding wars to secure top talent. The cost of maintaining competitive teams in the 2 leagues became unsustainable. This prompted discussions of a merger to consolidate resources and talent. There is profitable esport betting at the 1xBet platform, where the most competitive players and performers are present too.

On June 17, 1976, the merger agreement was finalized, bringing 4 ABA teams into the NBA. They were the New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs. The remaining ABA teams were disbanded, and their players were either absorbed into the NBA or became free agents. The merger terms included a $3.2 million expansion fee for each ABA team joining the NBA and the absorption of ABA contracts by NBA teams. At 1xBet you can make profitable betting on basketball teams but also on esports squads too.
