Court Permits Yahaya Bello’s Nephew To Travel Abroad Amidst ₦3 Billion Fraud Trial

Ali Bello, the nephew of the immediate past governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello, has received permission from the Federal High Court in Abuja, to travel to the United Kingdom for medical attention amid the ongoing fraud trial.

This decision was made on Monday by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who also ordered the release of Ali Bello’s passport, which had been seized as part of his bail conditions.

Justice Egwuatu overruled the objections raised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which opposed the defendant’s request to travel abroad.

The EFCC had argued that Ali Bello might jump bail or tamper with evidence if allowed to travel. However, the judge found the prosecution’s claims unconvincing, noting the defendant’s compliance with previous court orders.

“Since the grant of bail, he has not breached the terms of bail and has been coming to court to stand his trial. It is not controverted that this court had on two previous occasions granted the applicant similar prayers,” Justice Egwuatu stated.

He emphasized that on both occasions, Bello had returned to Nigeria to continue his trial without any issues.

The judge highlighted the importance of ensuring that a defendant is healthy enough to stand trial, stating, “I wholeheartedly subscribe to the view that a defendant should be alive to stand trial” and face the consequences if found guilty.

The court directed the deputy chief registrar to release Bello’s passport, enabling him to travel for medical purposes.

Additionally, Bello is required to return his passport by September 15, ensuring his continued compliance with the court’s conditions.
