Angry Osogbo Customers Break Into Food Warehouse

Customers of a discounted food scheme in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, have broken into and looted the warehouse of the operators after the place was shut and the owners could not be reached.

Videos seen online on Tuesday showed residents carrying food items out of the warehouse of Global Food Initiative, the outfit at the centre of the matter.

The crowd had stood in front of the warehouse for hours before suddenly breaking loose and taking away bags of rice, groundnut oil and other items.

This came a day after hundreds of customers gathered at the premises demanding the food they paid for or their money back.

The scheme started about three weeks ago and sold a 50kg bag of rice for 27,000 naira, 25 litres of vegetable oil for 30,000 naira and a pack of spaghetti for 10,000 naira.

Customers paid in advance and were told to come back after seven days to collect their goods.

Some customers paid hundreds of thousands of naira.

One woman said she paid 300,000 naira for 11 bags of rice, while another said she paid 1.2 million naira for items for her stepdaughter's wedding.

The operators are still unreachable, and the number of affected customers and the total money collected could not be confirmed.

Police in Osun deployed officers to the area to keep order.

Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the command learned of the situation only after arriving at the scene and that nobody had formally reported it at the time.
