Shocking! Man Cradles Son to Sleep at Night Only to Find the Boy Dead in Bed the Next Morning

 

 

The father, Luke Gower, who fell asleep while cradling his newborn son so that his girlfriend could rest, woke up the next morning to find the baby dead in bed.

 

According to Daily Mail, little Vincent Jones was just two days old when he died sleeping in the same bed as his father, Luke Gower from Thanington, near Canterbury in Kent.

 

The inquest into Vincent's death heard how Mr Gower had offered to soothe his son to sleep while the baby's shattered mother Poppy Jones got an early night.

 

He climbed into bed and cradled the infant on his chest at around 10 or 11pm on November 13 last year, but awoke shortly after 7am the next morning to find the newborn lying lifeless and facedown beside him.

 

'I gave him one feed when Poppy went to bed and then I was walking around with him patting his back,' Mr Gower told the inquest in Folkestone. 'I was sitting with him trying to get him to go to sleep. I sat in bed with him.'

 

Pathologist Kio Palm said baby Vincent had suffered 'a sudden unexpected death in infancy in an unsafe sleeping environment', adding that a post mortem examination had not revealed any underlying health problems or abnormalities.

 

Baby care experts warn against the dangers of 'co-sleeping', or sleeping in close proximity to a baby, often in the same bed, with newborns. 

 

'Nothing was found during the investigation about how he died,' Ms Palm said. 'Co-sleeping is a dangerous situation for a baby that is sleeping.'

 

Assistant coroner Christine Freedman said: 'He was a healthy, normally grown baby with no abnormalities in his development.'

 

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
