Suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Ajagbusi community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday morning, killing three farmers who were on their way to the farm.
It was gathered that the victims, who were riding a motorcycle, were ambushed and gunned down in cold blood by the assailants, who fled the scene immediately after the attack.
However, the motive for the killings remains unknown, while the community has been left in shock and mourning.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olushola, described the attack as “gruesome and unacceptable,” assuring the public that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators.
“Yes, three farmers were killed by gunmen, and tactical teams have been deployed to the area to restore order and apprehend the assailants,” Olushola said in a statement.
He added that the command had mobilised all necessary resources and tactical teams to the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order and to ensure the killers are brought to justice.
“We urge residents of Ajagbusi and the entire Akure North community not to take laws into their own hands but to cooperate with the police and allow security agencies perform their lawful duties. The command assures law-abiding citizens that they can go about their daily activities without fear,” he stated.
