As more colleges start to recognize the need to have a checker for AI in their classroom, we have seen the controversy grow over the accuracy of using such technology. This technology is needed because more students are using tools like ChatGPT to cheat the system and write their essays or complete schoolwork for them.

There are an increasing number of college students who are using AI to complete the research, and other content that is supposed to be done by their hand. This means that academia needs new tools created by AI technology to combat this issue.

Some people use AI technology to help with their paperwork and research, while others may use this technology to cheat the system to get better grades. The reality is that AI is here to stay, and we must learn more about the tools and share what we expect of students within the college world.

Most teachers don’t mind if students use AI tools like ChatGPT for research, but as time as gone on, we’ve noticed these tools aren’t accurate for factual information within academia. AI tools are great for basic research, and help with brainstorming, but when students use this technology as their number one way to complete work and write essays for them, they are taking a huge risk of possibly handing in false information and risking getting a bad grade from their teachers for it.

That said, with new options like AI detection tools, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that this tool isn’t the standalone answer to academia’s issue with students using AI for classwork and essays. There are some issues with this technology that are wreaking havoc on college students, and below are some of the issues that teachers and students have concerns about.

False Positives

One of the biggest controversies around using AI detection in academia is that this technology gives false positives. These AI detection tools aren’t always right, which means it could harm a student’s reputation inaccurately by saying they used AI when they didn’t use an AI content writer for their work.
This is why many people are wondering what we can do to help teachers who want to determine if something is AI more accurately than the current set of tools.

AI is Always Evolving

Another controversy that is often discussed when it comes to the accuracy of AI detection in academia is that the tech is constantly evolving. We’ve even seen OpenAI remove their AI detector tool because of the inaccuracy of the tool.

This technology just isn’t the most reliable option to use as a standalone choice to detect AI content within students’ work. This technology is always expanding and evolving, but right now it seems that we cannot rely solely on a detection tool.

Inaccuracy of Intent

An AI detector cannot tell if a student used ChatGPT or another AI writing tool with the intent to brainstorm or help with grammar rather than write the entire document.

This means that an AI detector may say that the student used artificial intelligence, but they only utilized this technology to do some of their work.

An AI detector cannot understand the intent of the person who used AI, this means that it falls upon a teacher to review what the student did within the paperwork after AI detection reports their view of the paperwork.

Some Tools Work Better Than Others

As you can imagine, some AI tools work better than others and that’s no different with AI detection tools. This technology is constantly advancing so that it can learn more about human behavior, and the habits of people who use AI content creator tools.

Some of the detector options online today are more advanced or have been online longer than other choices. When you’re choosing which AI detector to go with, it’s best to review how much data each of the tools have been trained on, and how accurate the users feel the tool is.

As you learn more about this technology, your students, and what both teachers and students feel is a reasonable request within academia pertaining to AI use, you will soon find that we all can reside together in this digital world, and learn from each other, without having our minds turn to mush because we are using AI too often.

As we continue to use a variety of AI tools within academia it’s more important than ever to find new ways to work with this technology. While we cannot use AI detection tools as a standalone option to determine if AI was used for completing an assignment, it can help open the dialogue between teacher and student to determine how much of the AI tool was used within the assignment, and what the teacher can set for guidelines within their classrooms to keep things honest between them and their students.
