Posted by Thandiubani on Wed 09th Jul, 2025 - tori.ng

The strike, which started in March, had disrupted academic activities in primary schools across the FCT.

The strike action embarked upon by teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been called off.

The strike which lasted more than three months was called off on Tuesday.

Teachers have been asked to resume classes on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The FCT branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) announced the development in a communiqué released following an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The union explained that the decision came after teachers received payments for the new minimum wage along with five months’ arrears on Tuesday, July 8.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the union stated.

The strike, which started in March, had disrupted academic activities in primary schools across the FCT.

The NUT said it decided to suspend the strike following the intervention of the FCT Minister, who engaged key stakeholders to address the issue.

As part of the agreement, the government disbursed N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue to help pay the wages and clear a portion of the outstanding arrears.

The union stated that within two weeks, a special committee would be established to reconcile the outstanding entitlements and develop a plan for sustainable funding.

However, it cautioned that the strike would resume without hesitation if the government fails to uphold its commitments under the agreement.

The union expressed gratitude to teachers for their patience and also thanked traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and others who supported them throughout the strike.
