A 17-year-old Massachusetts resident has been charged with killing his mother and younger brother, with prosecutors alleging he utilised artificial intelligence technology to investigate "theoretical ideas or fantasies" concerning family harm.
Arjun Aravind, from Acton, was arraigned on Thursday in district court on two murder counts, along with charges related to assault involving a dangerous implement.
He was processed as an adult under state law and entered a not guilty plea.
The court declined bail and remanded him in custody.
The district attorney indicated that investigators identified "concerning behaviour" preceding the homicides, encompassing internet activity and artificial intelligence chatbot utilisation.
He allegedly explored the chatbot to research theoretical concepts and scenarios regarding family harm.
Aravind stands accused of killing his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their residence on Martha Lane.
Police arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday following the father's request for a welfare check after becoming concerned when a tutor could not gain entry and family contact attempts went unanswered.
Officers discovered the younger brother deceased on the ground floor. The mother was subsequently found dead in the basement.
Evidence indicated a violent physical altercation within the residence, with both victims showing blunt-force trauma. Official causes of d£ath remain pending medical examination.
The mother's automobile was missing from the property. Aravind was apprehended at approximately 3:40 a.m. Wednesday inside the vehicle in a nearby parking lot without resistance.
Prosecutors indicated investigators recovered items from the vehicle believed to correspond with evidence from the scene, though authorities have not disclosed specific details.
Court filings indicate the father had grown concerned about his son's behaviour and online activity, prompting him to conceal knives within the household.
Defence counsel requested mental health evaluation, though the specific legal basis remained undetermined.
Aravind received hand injury treatment prior to arraignment and was medically cleared to attend.
The family had recently relocated to the affluent community approximately 30 miles from Boston, partly motivated by educational and family support infrastructure.
Aravind is scheduled to return for a probable cause hearing on September 11.
The allegations remain unproven in court.
