Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, says the Tinubu government should not read a recent World Bank report as proof that people are living better.
He says growth and higher revenue mean little when many Nigerians still struggle with poverty, jobs and the cost of living.
Obi said a stable economy is one where people can afford food, healthcare and school fees.
He pointed to a World Bank report, which he said shows that the government spent 7.7 trillion naira on debt interest from January to June 2026.
Revenue for the same period was 6.2 trillion naira, meaning interest payments were about 1.5 trillion naira higher than what came in.
He also said capital spending fell by about 700 billion naira in the first half of the year.
He accused the government of borrowing recklessly, mismanaging funds and presenting statistics selectively.
Obi also cited a United Nations Development Programme report that lists Nigeria among countries where poverty gains have been lost.
He urged the government to judge its reforms by how they affect the poorest people.
