Some thieves have been nabbed in the act after stealing some cars and then trying to sell off the stolen vehicles.

According to a Punch Metro report, the Nasarawa State Revenue Service Board said it had foiled attempts by suspected robbers to register some stolen vehicles, adding that three of the suspects had been arrested.

The chairman of the board, Mr. Usman Akposhi revealed on Sunday that the suspects were nabbed while attempting to renew the licences of the stolen vehicles.

According to Akposhi, the vehicles were found to have been stolen in Lagos, Cross River and Kogi states.

He said, “When we discovered that they were stolen cars through the board database system of renewal of vehicles licences and the names of the suspects did not conform with the names we have in the database, we had no other option but to call the rightful owners of the cars through their telephone numbers and the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation.”

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr. Barshir Lawal-Kano, said the vehicles had been handed over to their various owners.

“After thorough investigations, the command discovered that the three suspects were not the rightful owners; so, we handed over the cars to their owners,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Akposhi denied that the board was encouraging touts to operate around its premises, noting that the agency frowned on miscreants posing as SRSB workers and hijacking vehicle licences renewal from individuals.

“I am only aware of some thugs parading themselves outside the offices and hijacking renewal of vehicles licences from customers, giving them fake documents and it was reported to me by the FRSC,” he explained.

He dismissed allegations of extortion against his officials, stressing that motorists did not pay extra money to get their vehicle licences.

“I have never got any report of such complaints from the customers that the board in collaboration with the FRSC and the Vehicle Inspectorate Office allegedly collected N500 from customers to fuel generator before printing out their licences for them,” Okposhi stated.
